Olive oil in Portugal

Portugal is located in south western part of the continent of Europe and is flanked by the Spanish on the north and east and the opulent Atlantic Ocean in the south and west. This region is usually dominated by two major climatic types, namely, the oceanic type climate and the Mediterranean type climate. This Mediterranean type climate is extremely conducive to the growth of olive oil which has with the progress of time emerged as one of the major cash crops of Portugal. Portugal occupies the 8th position in the world market accounting for around 2% consumption, 1% production and 7.1 kg per capita annual consumption. These figures have been revealed by the current statistics gathered in 2005.

Portuguese Olive oil

In the Mediterranean regions, olive oil is a prominent crop which is gathered from the fruits of the olive plant (Olea europaea) and is often referred to as fruit oil. It is considered to be very healthy and hygienic having a plethora of beneficial uses. The presence of high proportions polyphenols and monosaturated fats like oleic acid makes it advantageous for health. Apart from the health benefits it provides, olive oil can also be used in cooking, cosmetics, fuels for illuminating oil lamps, soaps and also has a variety of medicinal uses. It is one product which has only positive effects. The Portuguese olive oil is golden, totally ripe and very strong.

Certain sections of the Portuguese landscape are very favorable for the cultivation and production of olive oil. Some of these regions include the hills of Moura region, the upper Douro, Norte Alentjano and the Tras-os-Montes region of northern Portugal. Apart from the climatic factors, innovative modes of cultivation and the used of technological tools have greatly aided its productions and therefore it has benefited the economy leading to economic prosperity.
