Olive oil in Portugal

Portuguese olive oilPortugal is located in south western part of the continent of Europe and is flanked by the Spanish on the north and east and the opulent Atlantic Ocean in the south and west. This region is usually dominated by two major climatic types, namely, the oceanic type climate and the Mediterranean type climate. This Mediterranean type climate is extremely conducive to the growth of olive oil which has with the progress of time emerged as one of the major cash crops of Portugal. Portugal occupies the 8th position in the world market accounting for around 2% consumption, 1% production and 7.1 kg per capita annual consumption. These figures have been revealed by the current statistics gathered in 2005.

Olive oil kindsOlive oil is obtained by means of extracting the oil from the fruits of the olive plant. In Portugal, olive oil groves are grown in many farms alongside the vines. In course of time, olive oil has emerged as a premier crop and today is also exported in foreign markets. Having a variety of advantageous uses, like in reducing the chances of heart diseases etc. olive oil has an edge over the other kinds of vegetable oils. Portugal also facilitates olive production because of its Mediterranean climate which is conducive to the growth of the crop.
